Headshots, studio & environmental portrait photography
Portraits can be taken either in a studio setting using my portable studio or as an environmental portrait on location. Many clients, including charities, blue-chip companies, magazines, and newspapers, request environmental portraits. This style of portrait makes the best use of the location to bring more of the persons story into the image. It could be a scientist surrounded by lab equipment, a person in their workshop, or someone at home familiar setting. These environmental portraits not only show who the person is but also give viewers insight into their world.
Standing in front of a camera can be daunting for anyone, especially when surrounded by the imposing setup of studio lights, backdrops, and equipment. It’s not unusual for subjects to feel a little out of their comfort zone which is why building rapport is crucial. I spend time chatting with my subjects, getting to know them, and creating a comfortable atmosphere. By doing so, I help reduce the tension and create a more natural environment. When the person in front of the lens begins to relax and they start to feel at ease their genuine personality can shine through making for a much better portrait.
Whether it’s a relaxed shot at home or a professional image for a high-profile publication, the aim is always the same: to create a portrait that feels authentic, engaging, and true to the person in front of the camera.
Before a typical portrait photoshoot I am always happy to advise on clothing and hair options as some clothes are certainly better on camera than others. Lighting and pose transform a portrait entirely, creating moods that range from dramatic and intense to soft and inviting. Understanding how different types of light interact with the subject is a vital skill, but there’s much more to it than mastering the technical aspects.
